Tips And Tactics To Help You Not Go Broke While In The University
Going through college is an expensive endeavor; once you decide to enter the university, you will probably have the right sense to apply for summer jobs and save up as much money as you can. However, even if you work the whole summer, your earnings will not last you through a whole year especially if you are shouldering other expenses such as purchasing books.
To save up on book expenses, you should:
1. Try to borrow some or all of the books you need to have. There is a big possibility that some of the upperclassmen will want to get rid of the clutter in their dorm rooms or apartments and if they are not strapped for cash, they will lend you the books, or better yet, give the books out to you. Just don’t put this off until the last minute so you will have a lot of choices.
2. Buy used college text books. If you cannot borrow, then scour the campus for book sales. There are a lot of upperclassmen that would want to get rid of their books and earn a bit of money at the same time. You will save half of your book expenses this way. You can also search online for websites that facilitate buying and selling of second hand books.
3. Look for “international” editions. If you want to have new books or if you are not able to find the books you need in used book sales, then you can buy this cheaper type of edition. There will not be much difference anyway except that the price is lower.
4. Sell your used books. After the semester is over, it is your turn to make some money out of your books. Try not to con anyone by selling your books at a higher value than what bookstores put on them. However, it would be best to get buyers for your books early so you would be assured of buyers before everyone else starts putting their books out for sale.
5. Sell your old books to the campus bookstore. If you are delayed in deciding which of your books you will still be needing and those that you can do without, the one convenient place to drop them into are campus bookstores. But since these campus bookstores need to make profit off your books, the prices will infinitely be lower than expected.
6. Keep your books as neat and clean as possible. Try to avoid folding pages of your books, or worse, tearing off some pages. You would not be able to sell books with missing pages. Additionally, avoid highlighting lines in your books or staining it with food and beverage spills from late night studying. Pity the next student that needs to buy second hand books from you because of lack of alternatives. Besides, the resale value of your book will definitely go down if you soil it, so don’t.
