One way to prop up this rather shaky proposition is through getting a student credit card. The credit available would surely be a great buffer in these times of financial turmoil. But how can one survive with a limited income on a student card? Here are some tricks in using your student credit card as a tool instead of a burden.

1) Proper expense management
Proper expense management is simply put budgeting the expenses one entails during the month as a student. This includes cost of food, books and other expenses associated with study. Remember, as a student, all your moves now would have a ripple effect in your success or failure in the future. Making a budget and sticking to it is key in having a student credit card.

2) For emergencies only
Since one already earns with a job, expenses for the month may be fully covered by the minimum wage paycheck. So having a student credit card is not to replace your paycheck, it is a financial tool for use if an emergency arises. No this is not for sudden dates or spring break trips to Cancun. The emergency thought of is for medical or academic emergencies that may arise during one’s student life. Make a list of what are considered as proper uses of the credit card and fold one’s credit card in it. This way, when one takes out the card, one is reminded as to the proper use for it. This is but a stop gap measure to avoid one’s credit from careening out of control.

3) Paying on time
This is probably the single most appropriate thing to do when owning a student credit card or having a credit card in general is to pay the bill on time, even for just the minimum amount. Failing to pay on time would have a great effect on one’s credit report. By skipping a payment, even only once, would affect one’s future credit and financial standing. Thus, it is emphasized that one has to pay monthly dues. Not only does this avoiding interest rate imposition, making the dent all the more burdensome, but it also pulls down one’s credit score. The credit score is a determination of one’s credit worthiness, which in turn affects future loan availability and availment. So, by religious payment of the monthly bill, one can avoid the pitfalls of student credit management.
